ABUJA, NIGERIA – (EuropeNewswire.net) — What initially appeared to be a major political scandal involving Nigeria’s Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, has unraveled into a case highlighting the dangers of unverified allegations, forged documents and the importance of evidence in determining public accountability. The episode also exposed weaknesses in administrative verification systems while reinforcing the principle that serious allegations must be supported by credible and verifiable evidence.
The controversy began when Prince Adeniyi Adeyemi Matthew, who presented himself as the Director General of the so called Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council, alleged that he paid Gbajabiamila ₦400 million, approximately $250,000, to secure an appointment. The allegation quickly gained widespread attention, sparking public debate and prompting demands for investigation.
However, the claims began to collapse after investigators found no evidence supporting the alleged payment. Adeyemi failed to provide bank records, receipts, transfer documents, text messages, call logs or any other documentary proof. Investigations further established that the Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council was not a legitimate government agency but a fictitious entity created and operated through forged documents. Authorities also discovered that Adeyemi allegedly used a forged appointment letter bearing a falsified signature of the Chief of Staff while operating from office space within the Federal Secretariat in Abuja.
The matter was later examined by the House of Representatives, where testimonies by the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation and the Accountant General of the Federation, supported by documentary evidence, reportedly established that Gbajabiamila’s signature had been forged. Based on the evidence presented before lawmakers, the House cleared the Chief of Staff of any involvement in the alleged appointment and bribery scheme.
The case took another significant turn when Adeyemi admitted during an interview that he had never met Gbajabiamila, never held a video conversation with him and had no direct communication with him. According to his own account, every interaction was conducted through an intermediary, with no independent verification that the individual he believed to be the Chief of Staff was actually Gbajabiamila. That admission further weakened the credibility of his allegation.
Meanwhile, Gbajabiamila voluntarily honored an invitation by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, cooperated fully with investigators and returned to his official duties. His legal team subsequently filed a multi billion naira defamation suit against Adeyemi. Several prominent commentators, including Daddy Freeze, VeryDarkMan, MC Izzy and journalist Fejiro Johnson, also concluded that there was no evidence linking the Chief of Staff to the alleged bribery after reviewing the available facts.
